This piece started with a random thought I had.
What if Oswald had always been part of the Disney roster of characters and had his look updated through the years like all of the other popular characters?
This idea intrigued me so much that I just had to draw it and see for myself.
The trickiest part in updating Oswald was trying to keep him from looking identical to Mickey. I also didn't want him to look exactly like how he does now, but with modern Disney eyes. I tried to experiment with him and play around with some of his facial features. I studied reference pictures of both the old 1920's and current versions of Oswald and Mickey while working on this. I even used reference material from Roger Rabbit in the final design of Modern Oswald.
I first sketched him out in pencil, then when I was happy with how he looked I inked the drawing. After that I scanned him into Photoshop where I did all of the coloring.

I would have made the face flesh tone as well, maybe add a few accents of other color on different parts of his fur.
